Magazine Front Cover: Analysis.

‘CLASSIC Rock’ is a well-known magazine for its articles involving Classic Rock bands; such as the above image, ‘ACDC’.
The masthead in this case is featured behind in image; the work ‘Rock’ is larger, and contains a small silhouette inside the ‘O’. The bold, white text has a styled font, which gives a classic genre to the front cover.
The main cover line is ‘WHOLE LOTTA ACDC’; the colours being red and black/white. The title is featured central; and half way down the page-underneath the band member’s faces. The text ‘ACDC’ is in its original, CD text format, with its original colours. This represents the band, and attracts the audience’s attention. Also, the red text, ‘WHOLE LOTTA’ is in thick, bold red; which stands out and attracts the reader’s eyes. Other text features on the page are in white and gold font, and are featured in other Cover lines, including the ‘10th birthday special’  that is placed on the bottom of the page, and along the sides of the cover.
At top of the masthead, there is advertisement on ‘4 free gifts’. The huge, red colour and the images of free items grab the reader’s eye, and persuade them to pick up the magazine and purchase it. The items such as ‘5 guitar picks’ are based around classic rock, and suit it’s genre well.
The image behind the text is a black and white photo of the featured band, ‘ACDC’. The five members close in for the photo; which suggests that they are quite close in their band, and they work as a team. Their expressions are mixed: bored, happy, curious, which may symbolise their personalities; one may be laid back-second from right-, while another may be outgoing-far right-. The guy at the front of the image perhaps suggests he’s the band leader; perhaps the singer. Whereas the guy at the far back-who struggles to get his face shown over the other members-, suggests that his part is less important in the band. The choice of black and white perhaps emphasizes the classic touch, and the audience are able to relate to this through their own memories of the band. They’re clothing in this photo is difficult to see, however some parts show classic and old-style clothing.
The lighting in this shot appears to be coming from high up on the right hand side, which then hits the faces of the band members-however not the one at the back-. This lighting may suggest the importance of the members. Also, shading is left around the eyes of the two members of the far right. This may symbolise mystery in their characteristics/personalities.

Layout
The layout of the double page magazine features a model on the left hand side of the page, with the written test opposite it. The text ‘USA’ is featured across the pages in the background, and the main title sits across the right hand side on the page. The camera crops the whole of the woman in the shot; including the seat and the flag.
House Style
The text format featured is a styled text-Main title- in Lucida Handwriting, and the background text of ‘USA’ is plain but bold text. The article itself appears to be in Arial. The image used is here is a studio image; which can be identified from the background, lighting and colours. The skin is also airbrushed, showing stronger beauty, which also brings out the colours more. Her pose suggests that she is posing for a photo-shoot; which tells the audience that-with her straight expression-she is serious about the story she’s given.
Images
The images features on this double page spread are a model, and a white and red striped flag. The photo of the model is seen in a long shot, only cropping is part of the magazine itself-her shoe-. The lighting is Studio light; bringing out the strong, deep colours within the images. The mis-en-scene consists of fashionable, dark clothing including black high heels and the deep red of her hair. Though these colours beam and immediately attract the reader’s eyes, they also contrast to the white and red flag that the model sits on. The ‘USA’ links with the American flag that the model poses on; portraying who she is, and her topic discussion. Her black leotard may also portray that she is a dancer, or a performer of sorts. The deep, strong red colours may represent love, beauty or strength.
Font
The main title featured on the right hand side is in Lucida Handwriting, in large text. The background text is bold and large-in simple Arial-. The article’s text is in simple Arial as well; in small font. Also, an initial letter is used at the start of the text: ‘D’. This suggests that this is the beginning of the text; and also attracts the reader eye.
Mode of Address
The article addresses the audience with the language, and the image presented. The language is quite informal, ‘got the love’, which gives an impression that this magazine speaks to the younger audience.

Subject
The photo of the woman takes up almost the entire middle of the left hand page, and only some of the flag enters the right side page. This allows the right hand side of the page to contain the even structure of text, and the left side to mostly contain the woman and the flag; which is the first thing the audience set eyes on.

Representation
The image of the American flag represents the Culture of the woman, and is shown through the ‘USA’ text that merges in the background, and represents her.
Audience
The audience may consist of those who are fans of the image of the woman, or those who acknowledge her music. The audience will fall under the younger generation, perhaps teenagers-25 year old women.

Preliminary Task- Introduction

The Genre of music we will be basing our magazine on is classic rock. However, the magazine allows sub-genres such as rock ‘n’ Roll Prog rock and Hard Rock. These will rotate around bands that have become idols over time for example, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Ac/Dc and many more. We will then introduce a new band who has been influenced by the above bands by doing studio images and writing a double page spread article about their career in the music Industry.
Our audience will hopefully be unisex students around the age of 16-19 who idol musicians, and to give them a taster of the new band and how they have become the new “Beatles/Pink Floyd”.  Our audience nowadays listen to music via the internet, Apple Products, Mobile Phones, and the traditional CD, compared to Vinyl discs and cassette tape that were all the rage when The Beatles were in the Charts. Our audience finds music through Radio, Television, the Internet, Concerts and CD stores which are all easy access today. The audiences Personal View will be recorded on a Podcast and Audio tape which will participate in the magazine in writing and on our blog. We aim to include audience interests in the magazine as it will attract them even more to our delicious gossip we have in store for them. These interests include Gigs, Posters, Latest news, Old and New bands and Clothing.

Layout
The layout of this magazine is set to address the audience by being loud and to be able to stand out. The Masthead is set to an angle portraying rebellion. In the top left corner a tab has been used to shout out that this double page spread is world exclusive announcing to the audience to read more about the band. Images are set to the left of the spread and the bottom leaving enough room above and to the right for the write up of the journalist findings. A column to the right of the spread gives the audience a quick overview or ‘lowdown’ of what the bands been up to recently.
House Style
House style on the double page spread displays the text to be in Myriad font which is very common in magazines. The introduction to the bands interview uses a drop cap. This shows the text to be important as it is world exclusive.
Images
The images show the band members rockin’ out together in their studio recording their new album. They are all in black and white which gives the audience a feeling that they have been in the dark but are about to return to daylight.  Their stance portrays them to be rebellious yet very dedicated to their job in the band. Their clothing is all black. This suggests that they are also returning from the dark ready to stand up in front of an audience.
Font
Myriad Font is used here as it is used in many different types of magazines. It is popular because is it plain and easily readable. It is set to a reasonable size at a guess of about 14 so it doesn’t appear bold but big enough for the audience to read it.
Mode of Address
The bands body language shows the audience that they are laid back, for example, the way the singer is leaning on his microphone. However, the image on the bottom right shows they are loud because of the expression on the singers face.
Subject
The image is taking up 2/3 of the frame which lets us see most of the subject we want to see as well as the background which portrays where they are, in this instant they are in their studio recording their new album.
Representation
The bands are representing teenagers who are into rock and punk. I know this because of their clothing and the colours that have been used.
Audience
I’d say the audience age range is around 15-20 because teenagers are very influenced by music in this day in age. As the audience I am very influenced to read more about this bands career because the eye catching title attracts me because of the colours used. I also like the layout of the double page spread.
